The Route to the Rainforest: Your Guide to Getting to Chachagua Rainforest Hotel

Chachagua Rainforest Hotel surrounded by lush Costa Rican rainforest

Some destinations are defined as much by the journey as by the arrival. Chachagua Rainforest Hotel & Hot Springs is one of them.

Nestled within the peaceful rural community of Chachagua, just outside La Fortuna, the hotel occupies one of Costa Rica's most unique locations. Surrounded by a private rainforest reserve and bordered by an important wildlife corridor, it offers guests an authentic rainforest experience while remaining just minutes from Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna Waterfall, hanging bridges, hot springs, and the region's many outdoor adventures.

Whether arriving by scenic mountain roads, regional aircraft, private transportation, or the famous Lake Arenal Crossing from Monteverde, every route reveals a different side of Costa Rica. Coffee plantations, rural villages, volcanic landscapes, and tropical forests make the journey as memorable as the destination itself.

From San José: Through the Central Valley to the Rainforest

For most international travelers, the journey begins at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).

The drive to Chachagua Rainforest Hotel typically takes 2½ to 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

From the airport, travelers commonly follow Route 1 (Interamericana Norte) toward San Ramón, connect to Route 702, and descend into the San Carlos region. Near Ciudad Quesada, the route joins Route 141, continuing toward La Fortuna and Chachagua.

Along the way, the scenery changes from the urban Central Valley to coffee plantations, rolling farmland, rivers, and lush rainforest. Many guests make the drive part of the experience by stopping at traditional soditas, Costa Rica's family-owned cafés, for fresh coffee, homemade tortillas, casados, tropical fruit smoothies, or the country's beloved gallo pinto.

Popular stops include San Ramón, known for its coffee culture, and Ciudad Quesada, where local bakeries and restaurants offer an authentic taste of rural Costa Rica before the final stretch to the rainforest.

Guests may choose a rental car or relax while one of Chachagua's trusted transportation partners handles the drive.

From Liberia: Across Guanacaste and Lake Arenal

Guests arriving through Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia enjoy another spectacular approach.

The drive generally takes about three hours, following Route 21 before connecting with Route 142, which skirts the northern shore of Lake Arenal. The journey passes through Tilarán, Nuevo Arenal, and La Fortuna, before reaching Chachagua via Route 141.

This route showcases Costa Rica's incredible diversity as Guanacaste's dry tropical forests gradually transition into greener mountains and rainforest. Scenic overlooks around Lake Arenal provide outstanding views, particularly on clear days when Arenal Volcano dominates the horizon.

Small cafés, bakeries, and roadside soditas along the route make excellent places to enjoy regional cuisine before arriving at the hotel.

Lake Arenal and its surrounding mountains

From Monteverde: Cross Lake Arenal

Although Monteverde and Arenal appear close on a map, the mountains between them make driving considerably longer.

Many visitors instead choose the famous Taxi-Boat-Taxi, also known as the Lake Arenal Crossing, one of Costa Rica's most scenic transfers.

The journey begins with a shuttle from Monteverde to Río Chiquito, followed by a covered boat ride across Lake Arenal. After approximately 30 to 40 minutes on the water, another shuttle continues from La Represa to La Fortuna and Chachagua.

The complete transfer usually takes 3 to 4 hours and offers spectacular views of the lake and Arenal Volcano, making it one of the country's most memorable travel experiences.

Let’s Go

From Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast

Travelers arriving from Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, or Limón generally follow Route 32 toward Guápiles, then continue along Route 4 through Pital before joining Route 141 toward Ciudad Quesada, La Fortuna, and Chachagua. Guests departing from Sarapiquí also connect via Route 4.

The journey passes banana and pineapple plantations, wetlands, rivers, and rainforest before reaching the lush northern plains. Guests traveling from Tortuguero can easily combine boat and land transfers, and the concierge team is happy to help coordinate these connections.

Flying to La Fortuna

For guests looking to maximize vacation time, regional flights are an excellent option.

The closest airport is La Fortuna Airport (FON) in El Tanque, approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Chachagua Rainforest Hotel. From the airport, it's about a 35-minute drive through the scenic countryside of the San Carlos region before arriving at the hotel's private rainforest reserve.

SANSA Airlines operates scheduled flights between San José and La Fortuna in approximately 30 minutes, offering breathtaking aerial views of Costa Rica's mountains, rivers, forests, and volcanoes.

Airport transfers between El Tanque and the hotel can be arranged in advance, creating one of the fastest and most convenient ways to reach the rainforest.
