Written by Chachagua Rainforest | Mar 24, 2025 4:23:02 AM

Step into a world where the air is alive with song, brilliant flashes of color dart through the emerald canopy, and every step holds a chance of a rare and breathtaking sighting. Costa Rica is a land of wonder for birdwatchers, a true paradise where more than 900 bird species thrive in its lush, diverse ecosystems.

Here at the Chachagua Rainforest Reserve, the birdwatching experience is nothing short of magical. You never know what your guide will help you spot; from the dazzling scarlet macaw to the feisty toucans that seem to dance among the branches, the rainforest invites you into its secret avian world.

Costa Rica’s dedication to conservation has preserved this haven of biodiversity, thanks to sanctuaries like the Chachagua Rainforest Reserve, where nature can exist undisturbed. This protected wonderland is home to resident and migratory birds, offering a never-ending spectacle of movement, song, and brilliant plumage. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious explorer, you’ll watch as the magic unfolds before your eyes in Chachagua.

A Birdwatching Hotspot

Recognized as one of the top birdwatching hotspots in the country, the Chachagua Rainforest Reserve boasts an astounding 352 species recorded in the Cornell University-backed eBird database. Every rustle in the foliage, every distant call, and every burst of color is a clue to a hidden marvel.

Just a few of the spectacular species you may encounter are:

The Scarlet Macaw

With its fiery red, golden yellow, and deep blue plumage, the scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is an unforgettable sight, and sightings often include more than one individual, as these highly social birds travel in pairs or small flocks.

Their loud, throaty calls echo through the rainforest as they soar above the treetops. Their long, flowing tails make up more than half of their impressive 84 cm (33 in) length and add to their majestic appearance, painting the sky with brilliant color.

Black-and-White Warbler

Among the many fascinating birds found in the area, the Black-and-White Warbler (Mniotilta varia) stands out with its bold, zebra-like plumage and unique foraging style. Unlike most warblers, this little acrobat moves like a nuthatch, creeping along tree trunks and branches in search of insects hidden in the bark.

Their high-pitched, “squeaky-wheel” song often echoes through the treetops, guiding birdwatchers to their location. Found in mature deciduous and mixed forests, these warblers breed in northern regions before migrating south, with some wintering as far as northern South America.

Keep your eyes on the tree trunks and branches—this monochrome beauty may be closer than you think.

The Motmot

A bird historically associated with mystery and beauty, the motmot (Momotidae family) is easily recognized by its distinctive racket-shaped tail, which swings in a hypnotic, pendulum-like motion. Cloaked in iridescent greens and blues, motmots are patient hunters, feeding on insects, small reptiles, and even the occasional poison dart frog. They often remain motionless on branches, blending into their surroundings until they suddenly reveal themselves with a flick of their unique tail.

A Breathtaking Guided Experience

As the golden morning light filters through the towering trees, you head out into the rainforest for an adventure guided by local naturalist experts who know every hidden corner of this vibrant rainforest.

Their trained eyes will help you spot even the most camouflaged birds, their knowledge bringing each sighting to life with fascinating stories of each bird’s survival, courtship, and songs. Even the tropical gardens that surround the Chachagua Rainforest Hotel’s rooms are a paradise where birds nest, feed, and display their breathtaking dance, and all are just steps away from your lodging.
