Discover the Magic of Chachagua on Horseback

Costa Rica is a land of natural wonders, rich biodiversity, and deep-rooted traditions. Among these traditions, horseback riding stands out as a historical necessity and a cultural emblem that emerged from life in the grasslands and mountain ranges where roads did not yet exist. Known as caballos in Spanish, horses have played a crucial role in the nation’s development and contributed to everything from helping lighten the load of agricultural work to participating in festive celebrations

Today, horseback riding continues to be a beloved activity for work and leisure and offers visitors an immersive way to explore the country’s lush landscapes. One of the best places to experience this is in the breathtaking Chachagua Rainforest, where a horseback riding tour offers adventure, tranquility, and an intimate connection with nature.

The Cultural Significance of Horseback Riding in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s cowboy culture, known as sabanero culture, is deeply ingrained in rural communities. The sabaneros, or cowboys, are skilled horsemen who have been tending cattle and working the land for generations. After Spain introduced cattle and horses to Costa Rica in the 1500s, festivals, rodeos, and parades throughout the country began celebrating this tradition.

The sabanero heritage shows up as exceptional horsemanship, including roping, riding, and cattle-driving techniques passed down through generations, along with a rich repertoire of oral storytelling. Their culture also reflects their profound understanding of the land as the seasons change,  a deep connection with nature, a welcoming hospitality, and strong community bonds.

You’ll get a glimpse into every aspect of this rich part of Costa Rican culture when you ride with us!

For those seeking an extraordinary way to experience Costa Rica’s famed biodiversity, a horseback riding tour through the Chachagua Rainforest is an absolute must. The horses used for the tour are incredibly well-trained, making the experience comfortable even for beginners, starting as young as nine.

All signs of civilization fall away as you journey through the rainforest, giving way to towering trees and crystal-clear rivers that carve through the terrain. From there, the horse's rhythmic pace allows you to take in the beauty of nature.

And for those with a taste for adventure, more capable riders are given the chance to guide their horse over more complex terrain, and with your guide’s help, you can pick up the pace on flat ground and experience how capable these gentle horses really are!

A Haven for Wildlife Enthusiasts

Chachagua Rainforest is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife. Because it lies at the intersection of several reserves, including the Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal National Park, the area offers some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities in the country.

During the tour, you might encounter playful monkeys swinging through the trees, toucans perched on branches, and even the elusive sloth lounging in its natural habitat. Rare plant species, some found nowhere else in the world, thrive in the many layers of the untouched forest.

Your guide will be invaluable, pointing out different species and sharing fascinating insights about the ecosystem. Sabaneros, like Diego, one of our guides who grew up in the region and knows it better than anyone, bring the tour to life with their deep knowledge, humor, and even impressive animal calls, which can start a howler monkey conversation going across the rainforest.

This blend of education and adventure makes the horseback tour fun and engaging for all ages.

The tour departs daily at 8:00 a.m. from the reception area and begins with a short walk to the stables. There, before setting out, our trained guides provide a safety briefing and introduce you to your horse, who’ll be your partner for the day, and walk you through all of the ways we check that they’re happy and healthy for the ride.

The ride is designed to showcase the most interesting areas surrounding the hotel and the Chachagua Rainforest and goes at whatever pace makes you and your group most comfortable. On average, the tour lasts approximately an hour and a half, making it perfect for both seasoned riders and beginners of all ages.

An Unforgettable Experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of the tour is the bond you develop with your horse. Immediately, their steady and gentle demeanor helps you relax and fully immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. Along the way, the quiet companionship between rider and horse fosters a deep connection with the environment, allowing you to experience the rainforest in a way that respects and preserves its delicate balance.

Horses have a well-documented calming effect on humans, and studies show that spending as little as 10 to 15 minutes in their presence, as well as simply being in nature, can trigger the release of endorphins, boosting mood and reducing anxiety. So there’s a scientific basis for why horseback riding can be a deeply therapeutic and restorative experience.
